I am somewhat notorious for falling for fake pop-cultural news I see on X via accounts like “Poo Crave” (and, more often than I would like, dropping said news into Vogue’s Slack with the comment, “Should we cover?”). So when I read that Cate Blanchett was set to star as Martha Stewart in an upcoming biopic directed by none other than Janicza Bravo, I assumed I had once again been conned; the idea of Blanchett playing Stewart was just too good for me to believe it could actually be happening. But, lo and behold, Variety officially confirmed the project’s existence on Tuesday.
I would watch Blanchett play pretty much anyone, with the possible exception of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt (not that I don’t think the Carol star would be amazing in the role), but there’s something particularly special about the legend-on-legend link-up that is Blanchett stepping into Stewart’s tasteful, garden-party-appropriate loafers.
The film’s working title is Good Thing, and I can only pray that it will share at least some DNA with Martha, R.J. Cutler’s 2024 documentary about the domestic-goddess-turned-billionaire, in which Stewart gets candid about infidelity in her first marriage and hits us with this iconic Dutch proverb: “If you want to be happy for a day, get drunk. If you want to be happy for a year, get married. But if you want to be happy forever, plant a garden.” Like…can you imagine Blanchett saying those immortal words? Because I definitely can!
