The city might be in the grip of a heat wave, but as far the fashion world is concerned the show must go on! With major names like Alexander Wang and Altuzarra on our schedule it was a big day for New York to say the least, and the stylish folk came out in droves despite the stormy weather conditions. Here, a list of highlights on our agenda.
1. New York Fashion Week first-timers: Nigerian designer Lisa Folawiyo brought her show to New York for the first time this season, with a charming offering to match the delicious macaroons at Ladurée's restaurant in Soho. London-based designer Isa Arfen was another who caught our eye with the David Hockney–inspired collectsion she showed at Milk.
2. Happy feet: The tasseled slides at Adam Lippes were a cool take on the idea of furry sandals in more ways than one.
3. Poolside with Prism: Sunglass and swimwear designer **Anna Laub’**s presentation at the top of the Standard hotel was perfectly timed given the heat wave. If only we'd packed our swimsuits!
4. The best front row of the week so far: Between Rihanna, Lauren Hutton, Nicki Minaj, and South African rappers Die Antwoord, the front row at Alexander Wang was a show in and of itself.
5. The grand piano on the runway at Telfar: With a sound track that included **Taylor Swift’**s “I Knew Your Were Trouble” and **Katy Perry’**s “Dark Horse,” the piano player on the runway gets our vote for best runway music.
6. The Killer Heels exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum: The Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit set a high bar for our expectations when it comes to fashion in a museum setting, and with an impressive roster of artists and designers including Nick Knight, Rashaad Newsome, and Manolo Blahnik, tonight’s opening didn’t disappoint.
7. Gingham at Altuzarra: French bombshell Brigitte Bardot famously got married in a pink gingham dress, and you could say the designer’s curvilinear tailored suits and slit skirts were cut from the same cloth.
