Aly Raisman’s Nervous Parents Prove Why Watching the Olympics Qualifies as a Sport of Its Own

Last night, while Aly Raisman was busy sticking Arabian double pikes and punch-front layouts to qualify for the all-around women’s gymnastics Olympic finals, her parents were in the stands completing a physically grueling task of their own. In Rio, Lynn and Rick Raisman picked up where the 2012 London Games left off, when their white-knuckle nervous parental squirming first launched them into Internet stardom.

As they craned their necks, clenched their stomachs, and shifted back and forth in near unison, we had to admit that however hilarious, their spectator performance requires a kind of athleticism all its own, displaying great mobility and, above all, core strength. For all of the gymnast’s hard work, her parents proved that athletic prowess runs in the family. Here, in four moves, let the Raismans inspire you to tone your legs, arms, and abs while you watch this month’s Olympics.

The Strong Arm

The Side-to-Side Lean
Targeting the obliques, a deep bend side to side simultaneously stretches and strengthens. Chattering your teeth will increase the caloric burning opportunities.

The Bend and Lift
Lean back at a deep 45-degree angle. The inside workout partner pulls the other back to an upright seated position, tightening his or her own abs.

The Stand and Clap
Pushing from your heels, stand up from your seat and flex your legs. Simultaneously swing arms from hips up to eye level and applaud fervently. Alternate move: a chest-high jab.

Now take a deep breath and do your best to maintain composure.
