Shearlings are the outerwear equivalent of a big bear hug. This season, designers whipped up the cozy furs in a variety of colors: classic camel at Chloé and Louis Vuitton, soft pastels at Calvin Klein Collection and Emilio Pucci, and from Miuccia Prada, teased Mongolian lamb in an earthy rust shade.

In keeping with the season's emphasis on ease, sharp tailoring took a backseat to slouchy suits. At Lanvin, Michael Kors, and 3.1 Phillip Lim, the result was loose trousers that fit like track pants, while at Alexander McQueen, pants were so oversized they came with three-inch cuffs.

Off the carpet (heck, even on it), traditional gowns can often feel old-fashioned and stuffy. For Pre-Fall, designers including Jason Wu and Ralph Lauren shook up the eveningwear equation by pairing soft sweaters with dressy skirts. The results looked casual and modern.

There's nothing new about standard plaid, of course, but the way designers are mixing and matching vibrant checks in one outfit this season does feel fresh. The mashed-up tartans from Altuzarra, Dior, and Kenzo were particularly compelling.

Instead of energizing their collectsions with prints, designers focused on vibrant color-blocking for Pre-Fall. The contrasting combinations from Givenchy, Narciso Rodriguez, and Roland Mouret all had graphic appeal.
