This Week, the Best-Dressed Stars Went Green and Glamorous 

It’s rare for everyone to be on the same page regarding style, and yet this week from Paris to Palo Alto, chill vibes were trending. The first digitally-focused fashion month wrapped up with French fashion’s big names showing their new collectsions to socially-distanced crowds. Louis Vuitton spring 2021 runway presentation featured a special guest appearance from tennis great, Venus Williams, who lit up the front row with her presence in a checkerboard print mini dress by Nicolas Ghesquière, plus a logo-covered bomber jacket. The outfit was Venus at her most daring, a 180 from her sporty French Open attire. In a modish white leather jacket and pants combo, actor Laura Harrier provided a counterpoint to Williams’s exploration of pattern. She kept the retro futurist vibe going right down to her silver cowboy boots.

The last days of PFW saw guests taking unexpected risks. After viewing the Paco Rabanna show, Natalia Vodianova took Julien Dossena’s lace slip dress onto the streets. The supermodel’s camel coat paired beautifully with the dress and her chainmail bag, but her most striking add-on was a mask that took the brand’s liquid metal motif into new territory. Chanel might be known for its Parisienne chic, though Lily-Rose Depp brought a little All-American charm to Virginie Viard’s front row in her sherbet tone bouclé jacket, floral tube top, and matching denim. When the colors are sweet as candy and the fabrics richly textured, classicism takes a back seat and Depp’s youthful interpretation felt modern.

Sustainability came to the forefront this week too, thanks to the virtual Green Carpet Awards. Guests beamed in from across the globe in pieces made using eco-friendly materials or vintage pieces pulled straight from the archives. Model Anna Ewers unearthed a wool and silk Max Mara suit older than she was; with its clean lines and beautiful fringe detailing, her piece from the brand’s fall 1989 show would look right at home on the runway today. Italian actor Matilda de Angelis went for custom in a black Prada dress and chunky ankle boots, both made from Aquafil’s ECONYL, a nylon material repurposed from fishing nets and textile scraps. As two examples of how to dress responsibly, Ewers and de Angelis’s respective outfits were chic, environmentally conscious, and completely in line with how celebrities should approach fashion in 2020.
