"The super era is long gone, but 2013 saw a group of models become social-media sensations. With hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers and diehards outside the shows who'll do just about anything to get a selfie with them, these girls rival even Hollywood celebrities for fans. It certainly didn't hurt Joan, Jourdan, or Chanel's profile when Beyoncé cast them in her newly released video for "Yoncé." They'll have an even more commanding presence on the catwalks come fashion week in February."

"It's funny how the most coveted item of 2013 was an accessory to an accessory. The Fendi fur monster charm was seen dangling off the straps of many, many handbags this year, and the momentum will continue into 2014, with men adopting fur monsters, too."

"Hedi Slimane's fall ’13 grunge-inspired collectsion for Saint Laurent proved more influential than critics predicted. Ripped jeans, waist-tied plaid shirts, combat boots, overalls, and bomber jackets became style essentials across the globe this year."

"Kanye West's relationship with Kim Kardashian may grab most of the headlines, but to me, his connection with Maison Martin Margiela, the house responsible for the couture masks he wears onstage, is just as newsworthy. Not since Madonna has a marriage between a musician and a designer been as powerful, or as real."

"This year didn't belong to an established European luxury house or an emerging designer. It belonged to Nike. Flyknits and Air Maxes found their way onto the feet of seemingly every major fashion editor, stylist, and model. And one of the most impactful statements from the street was the unlikely combination of white athletic Nike socks and simple, strappy black sandals. The brand turns 50 in 2014, and it's more relevant than ever."

"Definitely not for the faint-hearted. The most striking beauty statement of the year belongs to the women who were bold enough to go green."

"This year saw more and more women embrace a high-and-low mix, and the surprisingly novel idea of being comfortable. It wasn't about wearing the latest It item in 2013, and it wasn't about being bound by labels and dress codes either. I found it refreshing to see women playing with fashion again, combining urban streetwear and athletic sportswear with things that are more precious and luxurious."

"Fashion week has become competitive, with everyone trying to outdress each other. Everything has become so predictable. This group of women is getting recognized for their carefree, effortless approach to dressing. Instead of a street-style uniform, they're opting for pared-down looks that seem more approachable to the average woman. If anything, they remind me of a time when street style wasn't about dressing for the camera, but more about being at ease and not giving a damn."
