For the Smiths, moviemaking is a family business. Jaden has starred in two films alongside his father—The Pursuit of Happyness in 2006 and After Earth in 2013—with more collaborations possibly to come. (Is it too much to hope for a Jaden cameo in Bad Boys 4?)

Art imitated life in this 1981 drama, which saw Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda play a father and daughter at odds. (When Jane purchased the rights to Ernest Thompson’s 1979 play, she wanted her father—with whom she had a notoriously bumpy relationship—to play the prickly patriarch Norman Thayer.) On Golden Pond would be Henry’s final performance, and when he was too sick to accept his Oscar for the film, Jane accepted the award on his behalf.

At four years old, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt made her screen debut alongside her mother in 2014’s Maleficent. She served as an adorable foil to her mother’s powerful fairy as the young Princess Aurora. Jolie-Pitt reportedly earned a salary of $3,000 a week and a $60 per diem for the part. Not bad for a toddler.

After making her big-screen debut alongside her mother in 1995’s Now and Then, Rumer Willis went on to star as Moore’s onscreen daughter in the decidedly grown-up Striptease. Willis has also twice worked with her famous father, Bruce: in 2000’s The Whole Nine Yards (in an uncredited role) and 2005’s Hostage.

Why use actors when you can cast your family? It’s certainly been the preferred approach of director Judd Apatow, who worked with his wife, Leslie Mann, and their two daughters in Knocked Up, Funny People, and This Is 40. (Years later, Maude would also appear in HBO’s Girls, which Apatow executive-produced, while Iris would have a supporting role in Netflix’s Love, created by Apatow, Lesley Arfin, and Paul Rust.)

In this 2008 film, Colin plays the rebellious son to his real-life father, Tom. It wasn’t the first time they shared the screen, however: In 1996, Hanks the younger had a small cameo in his father’s film That Thing You Do!.

Not only did It Runs in the Family star three generations of Douglases, but some plot points hit rather close to home. Like his character, Cameron struggled with substance abuse, eventually going to prison for possessing and selling drugs. (He was released in 2016.)

While the Stillers shared the screen a few times before Jerry’s death in 2020, perhaps their most memorable collaboration was in Zoolander, which cast the elder actor as agent Maury Ballstein.

Donald Sutherland and Kiefer Sutherland, Forsaken
Celebrated for his performances in Klute, Ordinary People, and, more recently, The Hunger Games franchise, Donald and Kiefer—the longtime star of Fox’s action drama 24—starred together in 2015’s Forsaken as an estranged father and son. In prior years, the pair had also teamed up on 1983’s Max Dugan Returns (Kiefer’s big-screen debut) and 1996’s A Time to Kill.

Kurt Russell and Kate Hudson, Deepwater Horizon
Although Hudson and Russell are not related by blood, Russell has been in a relationship with Hudson’s mother, Goldie Hawn, for decades and raised Hudson (along with her brother Oliver) as his own. In 2016, the two starred in the disaster drama Deepwater Horizon about the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Taika Waititi, Matewa Kiritapu, and Te Hinekahu, Thor: Love and Thunder
Not only did Waititi direct Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), but he also lent his voice to the role of Korg in the Marvel franchise. His two children, Matewa Kiritapu and Te Hinekahu, had brief roles in the latter Thor installment, too (as did Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and Chris Hemsworth’s children).

The legendary mother-daughter duo shared the screen for the first time in 1949’s In the Good Old Summertime, when Minnelli was just three years old. Needless to say, a star was born.
