Backstage at Eckhaus Latta’s Spring 2021 Show in New York

The scene matters at an Eckhaus Latta show, which is why designers Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta have made a habit of asking the fashion set to meet them in Brooklyn warehouses or (in the case of last season) a former Abercrombie & Fitch store in lower Manhattan. On a crisp New York fall day, the pair offered a simple, elegant solution to having a fashion show during a pandemic: They asked their friends to model, invited just under 10 guests, and turned a running path under the FDR Drive on the East Side into a makeshift runway. With the rattle of the subway crossing the Manhattan Bridge overhead and the East River lapping at the backs of attendees, it was a serene alternative to the chaos so associated with Fashion Week. Before the show, models congregated in a park, doing their own makeup with a MAC palette and having their hair tended to by stylist Holli Smith.
