The Couture Crowd Celebrated the Legacy of Elsa Schiaparelli at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs

Last night, Schiaparelli’s current creative director Daniel Roseberry was chatting up celeb guests at the opening of the first-ever extensive retrospective for Elsa Schiaparelli. “Shocking! The Surreal World of Elsa Schiaparelli” at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris contains thousands of pieces from the designer and her contemporaries, from a Salvador Dalí coat covered in shot glasses to a fur bracelet (the pairing to the infamous teacup) by Meret Oppenheim, and of course, iconic pieces like the Lobster gown once worn by Wallis Simpson. All of these moments were ripe for conversation as guests discussed their favorites.

“It was just about adding another layer of depth to the way that people understand and think about Schiaparelli,” Roseberry said in the lobby of the museum where the cocktail was held. “I think the more time that’s gone by, the more that I’ve become more confident in the voice that we have today, the more at ease I feel with the archives. And it’s been such a joy to see the archives presented together.”

Much of the exhibition also included Roseberry’s recent work, like oversized egg earrings covered in snakes and sculptural cone bra gowns directly from the runway. “She has such a specific, distinct voice and sense of humor that is uniquely Schiap,” Roseberry said on the process of working with the curator to bring the exhibition to life. “We’ve tried to capture that because there’s a sense of humor.”

As a special surprise, the fall 2022 couture collectsion that was presented earlier this morning was on full display, so guests—including Hunter Schafer, Natasha Lyonne, Farida Khelfa, Rita Ora, Jeremy O’Harris, Chiara Ferragni, Rossy de Palma, Richie Shazam, Karlie Kloss, and Coco Rocha—could take in all the rich and multilayered details while sipping champagne at the same time. Roseberry was feeling especially attached to one look from his new collectsion in particular—the orange bolero jacket inspired by an archival Lesage piece in the exhibit. “I’m a sucker for the color,” he says with a laugh.
