What will women wear come fall? And how does a woman want to dress anyway? These questions consumed us as we watched fashion shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. Designers had a multitude of answers, from the structured suiting seen at Céline and Stella McCartney to the unabashed romanticism of Alexander McQueen and J.W.Anderson to Space-Age glitz chez Paco Rabanne and Chanel. The moral of the season just might be that there is no single, defining point of view—diversity in style, silhouette, and substance is what makes fashion great. That said, there are a few prevailing style cliques we’re expecting to see next September, from the pastel puff coats of Milan to the pants-free trend that’s already taken Los Angeles by storm. Meet them in the slideshow, and remember: You do you.

2/188The optimism and high shine of the Space Age is back on catwalks for Fall. Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello whipped up a glittering finale worthy of Studio 54 while Chanel outfitted models for the moon with Mylar-inspired shawls. The tenor for this Days of Future Past sci-fi style was set at Paco Rabanne, where Julien Dossena remade the maison’s chain mail dresses in slinky silver and gold. We’re ready for liftoff!

14/188No explanation needed here. Designers from Stella McCartney to Victoria Beckham served no-frills takes on power women this season, perhaps inspired by pantsuit legend Hillary Rodham Clinton.

56/188Where Rihanna goes, others follow, so it’s little surprise Rih’s favorite trend—going sans culottes for a night on the town—has arrived on the runway. The options are endless, from Marques ’ Almeida’s arty take to Marc Jacobs’s groovy one. Just remember, with no pants, you will need showstopping shoes . . .

99/188Feathers are proving to be the must-have cocktail dress detail of the season. Sonia Rykiel offered up a wild bunch of marabou feathers for evening, while Dolce & Gabbana used large, dramatic plumes to accent its outerwear.

115/188A rose by any other name . . . is still Fall’s best floral. The romantic print appeared throughout collectsions, adding a quirky spin to basics. Look for the red blooms at this May’s Met Gala.

143/188Highland knits, whether done as a Fair Isle with a twist at Loewe or a graphic option at Louis Vuitton, are the sweaters to scoop up this Fall. With lively colors, vivid patterns, and a prim spirit, these heritage knits reflect fashion’s optimistic mood and its current obsession with craft and culture.
