We stayed at Can Lis in Portopetro, a villa built of yellow-pink sandstone on a cliff overlooking the Balearic Sea. Designed by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon, a place that became a muse for my collectsion, and for a week and a day it was ours. We packed light, living in our bikinis and spending our days shooting the Hesperios Spring collectsion with my Mayima and 100 rolls of Portra 120 film.

The diving spots were surreal, unforgettable, and terrifying for me. Diving off the sailboat and swimming to a rock formation where our captain knew of an underwater cave, and then diving into a mysterious pool of water and having to hold my breath for 15 seconds while swimming through a dark underwater tunnel, until I got to the other side of the cave. Like a rite of passage. The colors here were so hypnotic, the changeling water of cerulean blue and deep phthalo green.

Isa read Clarise Lispector and I read In Love by Alfred Hayes, a book Lorin Stein of the Paris Review recommended for my trip. One of my favorite things is to be read to, so Stella read poems by Richard Brautigan out loud. I loved listening to his funny West Coast words in her soft English accent.
Photo: Autumn Hruby / Courtesy of Hesperios5/27Every day we painted with Kremer watercolors; we used champagne flutes, chairs, and writing desks as models, bunches of black grapes and bougainvillea in bright orange, red, and fuchsia. Our daily rituals were all cooking, long breakfasts and lunches in the courtyard, daily trips to our local market, walks to a nearby swimming cove, lots of music, books, and conversation.

This was our first time to the restaurant, only accessible by boat or a long hike. We sailed here and walked up the canyon to have lunch from an open fire. I love their padrón peppers and Isa ordered the seafood paella to share. The restaurant view is stunning.

Photo: Autumn Hruby / Courtesy of Hesperios19/27I’ve always (secretly) wanted to race cars professionally. This 1961 Mercedes 190sl soft-top convertible is such a perfect fit for my sensibility. Built for speed, but such an elegant drive and amazing on short and long road trips. The weather was so perfect for weeks on end that I never once put the top up.

Most of the furniture, writing tables, and surfaces are also made of sandstone and tiles with sunlight, shapes, and nature playing an integral part of the landscape.

They were named for the protecting spirit appealed to by fighters of Guinea-Bissau’s War of independence (1963–1974). It became our theme song.
