Holly Humberstone Was a Goth Pop Princess—With the Wardrobe To Match—at Coachella

It’s been four years since Holly Humberstone last took to the Coachella stage. Wearing a black bikini, stripy armwarmers, camo pants, and a defiant dash of black eyeliner, the British musician enraptured the desert with a neat set of singles and EP tracks, lithely lyrical and kinetically synthy, melancholic pop that balanced earnest emotions with big-pop production. Her biggest track at the time, the luminous-versed “Scarlett,” reverberated through the crowd: “I said, ’Darlin’, will we go the distance?” fans screamed to each other, “darling” made even more delightful in international mouths.
Humberstone returns to Coachella to play the Gobi stage with an excellent debut album already under her belt and an evolved personal style. Weekend one, too, marked the release of her sophomore record, Cruel World. “It felt crazy to finally be in the desert,” says Humberstone. “I’ve made an album I’m super proud of, so I feel extremely lucky to get to share it with the world at Coachella.”
Humberstone, who has toured with Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo since, recalls being here in 2022: “I was super carefree and had this naive confidence about me! I feel like, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve weirdly become more nervous and self aware. So this time felt a little more scary, but ultimately, more rewarding.”
The set kicks off with the new record’s lead single, “To Love Somebody,” a song inspired by watching a friend’s brutal heartbreak, set to full-bodied, harmonizing vocals and lyrics made to be shouted back. “It feels like a communal song, and it’s really been connecting with people in crowds in the way I hoped it would,” she says. More songs include the airy-stringed “Beauty Pageant” and the disco-inflected “White Noise.” “A lot of this new album was written with a live context in mind because of how much I love touring and my band.” It’s a super close-knit group, consisting of Lauren O’Donnell Anderson (drums), Jack Louis Rennie (guitar), and Seth Tackaberry (bass guitar and keys), who have faithfully toured and performed with her.
While some things have remained a constant, Humberstone’s style has been through a few evolutions. “I feel like being in your 20s is a time of constant reinvention and trying to discover who you are,” she reflects. “My wardrobe has been through so many different phases, even in the past two or so years.” She feels most herself in the current moment, her aesthetic inspired by things she found when clearing out her childhood bedroom: old ballet shoes, theater bills, fairytale books. Lace fabrics and vintage accessories that “tell stories of her own” compound her wardrobe. “I wanted the styling to feel otherworldly and ethereal like the music feels,” she says.
For weekend one, Humberstone—who is styled by Lauren Groves—wore a Dilara Findikoglu dress: a cream babydoll style with frilled cap sleeves and a sheer ruffled skirt, accessorized with several vintage pieces of jewelry like a pearl choker sourced by Rebecca Sweeting, organic-shaped Klara Fokicheva pendants, and a sculptural Dosis G6C choker. On her feet, a pair of sweet Lili Curia white booties—a London-based footwear brand beloved by the British it-girls. “My favorite bit of the outfit was my headpiece, which we sourced from the amazing vintage collectsor Rebecca Sweeting. It has shells and ribbons and I felt like a princess,” she says. Makeup incorporated softly diffused blush, a vegetal smoky eye, and a gradient red lip.
Weekend two’s on-stage look was dark and delicate: an Ottolinger corset with a ruffly Edwardian high-neck, paired with Reparto bloomers, and another pair of witchy Lili Curia boots. Cheap Replica Handbags was vintage. “The brooch was sourced from an antique market and was sewn onto the corset for a cute little detail,” Humberstone adds. “I love incorporating little details like that to make a look feel more personal and special.”
Both weekend looks spoke to the visual universe of Cruel World, which transitions from the dreamy to the dark. “Weekend one felt very light and almost fairytale-like, whereas weekend two is more gothic and romantic—a contrast between two worlds,” Humberstone says.
As for the rest of her Coachella experience? Humberstone floated around the festival—“that’s my favorite way to discover new music”—and caught some of her favorite Alex G. Off-stage, she opted for a seawitchy Who Decides War corset dress with a Klara Fokicheva charm belt and more vintage gold jewelry, paired with Chloé Mary Janes. A raspberry colored, lace-trim Chloé dress set the boho tone for flitting around the desert. In between the weekends, Humberstone hung out in L.A. and appeared on Jimmy Kimmel, bringing with her a wardrobe of Chopova Lowena, Kiko Kostadinov, and House of Aama, looks that kept up the celestial, dark syrup-sweet rhythm.
