“I grew up in the punk scene,” says Olko, “so zines have been a constant presence throughout my life. Buying them or getting them from friends was the way we stayed connected before social media became the way every single person (even grandparents) stayed in touch. Zines are this great, informal way of being able to tell a story however you like . . . drawings, photos, text, whatever.”

“I met with each contributor and photographed them and hung out, and I really loved the personal moments and those times of connection,” says Olko.

“I think there’s a lot of freedom in designing clothing, and so much room for expression and experimentation,” Olko states. “I like that you can create this whole other world through a collectsion, and then develop a whole story to photograph, draw, cast models, shoot video, et cetera. It’s a constant buzz of ideas floating around, which is good for me, because I get bored if I’m not constantly creating. Also, making clothes has to be collaborative. I like working with people.”

“I found a lot of love and safety in putting the zine together, because it was a huge collaboration,” Olko told us. “People did it because they cared. The irony is, it made me feel safe and filled with love and gratitude and even more inspired, and it cost almost no money. But I think that’s art—old friends, new friends, the people you trust to work with your creative vision always, and then the new people who come into the mix because they trust you and they want to work with you. And you create things together you wouldn’t [have] on your own. It’s truly beautiful.”
