The pre-fall 2020 collectsions may have taken a practical route sartorially speaking, prioritizing “wearability over flash” as Vogue’s Steff Yotka observed, but there was still plenty of room to play with beauty: See the ’80s-inspired jolts of color at Valentino, or Chanel’s Métiers d’Art runway, where Sam McKnight and Lucia Pica offered up a parade of heart-stopping hair and makeup feats (high-gloss pouts! stamps of shimmer! camellia-dotted lacquered lengths!).

Nevertheless, the season also showcased a handful of less-is-more moments sure to tempt even those with 12-step routines; after all, if wunderkind Daniel Lee’s runaway success at Bottega Veneta is any indication, the fashion flock may soon be pairing their oversized pouch purses and square-toe sandals with little more than a low-key glossy lid.
