Thousands Flooded the Streets to Celebrate a Post-Lockdown Pride in Paris

France’s long and illustrious LGBTQ+ history spans from the work of queer writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (better known simply as Colette) to the 2020 election of Marie Cau, the first openly transgender mayor in the country—and nowhere was that history more evident than on the streets of Paris during the city’s Pride parade on Saturday.

As Paris Pride attendees marched to the Place de la République on the city’s Right Bank, the mood was alternately celebratory and somber; many denounced a new Hungarian law that bans the distribution of school materials deemed to promote homosexuality or trans identity, while other chanted, “Less talk, more rights.” Below, take a tour through photographer François Guillaume’s experience of the Pride parade in Paris.
