Cast in the form of Emilio Pucci’s bottle-green psychedelic velvet suit, Prada’s Almost Famous shearling redux, Marco de Vincenzo’s glittering separates, and Saint Laurent’s deep scoop necks, fashion’s love for the seventies was resurgent on the runways this spring. Wide-leg jeans and embellished sweaters at Gucci; bohemian evening dresses at Valentino, Altuzarra, Dries Van Noten, to name a few; suede at Derek Lam, Miu Miu, and Loewe; fringe at Thakoon and Proenza Schouler; white lace at Erdem, Rochas, and Oscar de la Renta; and denim, denim, denim at Chloé, Stella McCartney, Louis Vuitton, and more. You could call spring 2015 a festival of festival-girl style, but as you craft your look for the year, plant yourself not in the midst of a nameless crowd but right on stage: Turn to the performers whose fashion sensibility was as original and influential as the music they made. Soundtrack as mood board? That’s the story of the season. Folk singers, soul singers, disco queens, country stars, psychedelic rockers. Know these women, know their songs, make their looks your very own. Here, ten muses for now, as they were back then.

The original Lady of the Canyon is starring in Saint Laurent’s campaign for spring 2015, and this feels just as right as **Joan Didion’**s Céline moment, reigniting our affection for flowing knit dresses, and stacks of silver and turquoise jewelry—belts, rings, bracelets, and all.

She first made a name for herself in the seventies by harmonizing with others, everyone from Gram Parsons to Willie Nelson. After the shock of Parsons’s untimely death, Harris struck out on her own with albums of soulful country ballads that resonate alongside her recent records. Last weekend’s D.C. tribute honored her music; here we honor her penchant for worn-in denim, fringe, and sweetly patterned scoop necks.

Joplin died young, in the fall of 1970, but her music and electrifying presence cast an irreverent, psychedelic shadow over the decade, and fashion in the form of armfuls of bangles, piles of scarves, embellished trousers, and texture, texture, texture.

Her stunning presence grew in power as the seventies wore on and as she made her split from Ike by the decade’s end. But solo or duo, her style was absolutely singular: minidresses, bold embellished high collars, skintight looks, and animal prints.

The singer-songwriter scored the biggest hit of her career, “You’re So Vain,” as the seventies swung into full gear, and she proceeded to adopt what is perhaps the most free-flowing uniform ever: a succession of hip-hugging pants, suede hats, big round shades, sweet floral-print maxi dresses, sheer tops, flowy skirts, and gladiator sandals.

Before Pharrell, there was Aretha’s bow hat, which immediately earned its own facdbook page after she wore it to sing at **Obama’**s inauguration. But before Aretha’s hat, there was Aretha herself, and Lady Soul in the seventies was all about the signature details: graphic motif knits, robes and turbans, open-neck dresses with ribboned sleeves.
