It’s been a minute since suiting was top of mind for the fashion-obsessed among us. Tailored trousers and jackets haven’t necessarily been on anyone’s radar over the last few months, and it’s probably because most people don’t equate them with comfort and ease—two of the biggest retail buzzwords of 2020. But that notion is actually far from the truth, and suits can look and feel effortless, whether you’re going back to the office soon or wearing it for a Zoom meeting or a quiet dinner at home with a couple of friends. French-American model Camille Rowe is an expert in such ensembles, and she shares her tips on how to leverage this kind of cool, suited-up style in Vogue’s latest video series, 7 Days 7 Looks. As Rowe notes during the video, “This is my French-girl style moment. I love a suit for every occasion.”
As she shows us in 7 Days 7 Looks, Rowe slips on her favorite black wide-leg Acne Studios pants and matching oversized blazer. “It’s one of my favorite suits,” the model says. “I kind of love the cut of the pants.” Instead of pairing the Acne look with a simple T-shirt or a classic button-down, Rowe creates a DIY three-piece suit by adding a fitted vintage vest underneath. “I’ve always loved three-piece suits, the sort of masculine and feminine moment feels very French, sort of like the Yves Saint Laurent women of the ’70s,” she says.
Lastly, Rowe adds a pair of black boots by the Row. “I like that they are a bit long and pointy and then they just pop out of the pant,” she describes while playfully bending a knee to demonstrate the point of her boots peeking out from beneath the hem of her trousers.
Then there are the accessories. While going-out bags have been rendered useless during days and nights spent at home, Rowe has been opting for adornments that are more practical in 2020. “The accessory I’m going to wear is just red lipstick,” she says on camera in 7 Days while swiping a bright red hue across her pout and dabbings it with her fingers. “French ladies don’t really put on a lot of makeup. It’s all about the lip, or wearing something more masculine and then the lip makes it feel more feminine. It has been a very French thing forever.”
Rowe’s video tutorial is a master class in achieving the dressed-up nonchalance that is French-girl style. “There’s something about French women, they do dress well,” she says. Taking these notes from Rowe, it’s true that throwing on a sharp black suit with a red lip this holiday season and beyond feels like the ideal solution for dressing up, no matter your plans.
