In a season that saw the clothes grabbings the spotlight, the accessories, while much more subdued, were still a big part of the story. This time around, they are less of-the-moment and more seasonless. For the most part (save a great fur glove here and there) they are the kind of classic, understated items that you can buy now and wear forever.

In a season where the coat played the role of big, splashy accessory, the handbag took a backseat, but brilliantly. Gone is the notice-me hardware, and in its place is a quiet, classic functionality. These are the worth-the-splurge bags (look to Prada and Chloé for shining examples) that will last longer than you do, and be suitable for any location at any time of day. Want to blend in even more? The discreet bags at Proenza Schouler, Céline and Hermès were so understated (and, in some cases, were done in the same pattern or fabric as the clothes) that they almost disappeared.

Where does the boot end and the tights begin? Riding up to the knee (or even stretching above), the fitted stocking boot was one of the sexiest, yet most wearable, trends for fall.

While punk and menswear were certainly dominant trends this season, there was also a distinctly feminine, pretty (and frankly refreshing) forties-era sensibility to be seen, from the stacked heel sandals at Prada to the paste jewelry at Rochas to the frame bags at Dolce & Gabbana.

Let’s hear it for the brogues. From New York to Paris, it quickly became clear that this is the silhouette you must have on hand for spring. If you think it’s only for day, however, think again. These shoes go with everything from menswear-style suits to evening dresses.

Designers, and particularly jewelry designers, have re-invented the prim-and-proper pearl this season, making it look young and fresh by using it in the most unconventional of ways, most notably on knuckle rings and boots at Alexander McQueen, on stud earrings at Christian Dior and Delfina Delettrez, and as adornment for hats at Maison Michel.

With the upcoming
“Punk: Chaos to Couture” show opening at the Met this spring coupled with the all the punk-inspired looks we will be coveting for our closets come fall, one wonders if the movement (at least as far as fashion is concerned) ever really went away?

In a largely hardware-free season, there were still plenty of interesting, elegant, undoubtedly eye-catching metal touches to be found, be it on the heel of a great Sergio Rossi ankle-strap to a more unexpected belt at Burberry Prorsum.

Striking a dramatic counterpart to this season’s discreet bags were designers’ wild takes on fur, which will be the ultimate in practical decadence once the weather turns cold again. The most dazzling options were put forth by Fendi, with loud, colorful fur bags, but there were also a lot of unexpected fur extras on the runway, including Marni’s scarves and Altuzarra’s wild winter gloves.
