Last Week, Stars Went Chic and Sustainable

Eveningwear is by definition “all fun/no business.” Last week the world’s most stylish were in a giddy, off-hours mood, plunking for bold flourishes, high shine, and gobs of attitude. For example, Naomi Scott chose Richard Quinn’s floral minidress and latex catsuit ensemble for the London premiere of Charlie’s Angels. The effect was young and directional, and just right for a reboot of a sassy series. Zazie Beetz went high-stakes metallic at the TrevorLive Gala when she made an entrance in Rodarte’s gilded ruffles. The combination of gold leather and a plunging neckline was no small fashion challenge but Beetz triumphed handily.

For some actresses, subtlety remains the surest option after dark. To pick up a Bambi Award for Best Actress, Naomi Watts was fawn-like in a chic lace bohemian number by Maria Grazia Chiuri for Christian Dior. For quiet cool, the blush satin Narciso Rodriguez slip Alek Wek wore to Lincoln Center’s tribute to Leonard Lauder was stellar. Likewise, Ella Balinska chose a modest navy Prada gown with an extraordinary leg reveal for the same event. These two dresses nodded to the minimal ‘90s in a way that felt exactly right for now.

And then there is the always stellar presence of Iman. At the CARE Impact Awards, the supermodel wore a custom evening gown and cape by Zac Posen that was created in collaboration with Bangladesh’s Living Blue farmer’s collectsive. The floor-length ensemble, made entirely of organic indigo, was a thrilling merger of glamour and sustainability—and what could be chicer than that?
