The Best-Dressed Stars at the 2019 American Music Awards 

The anything-goes, somewhat mischievous spirit of the American Music Awards always finds its way onto the night’s red carpet. Tonight the artists went playful, forgoing drop-dead glamour for more personal, quirky (and delightful) options. Lizzo took the mini-bag trend to its logical extreme, carrying a charm-sized purse with her Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino abbreviated ruffled frock. As always, Billy Porter made the case for couture-ish drama in menswear by pairing Thom Browne’s spring 2020 seersucker cape with a divine Stephen Jones hat. Meanwhile, Billie Eilish (always a bit ’90s, a smidgen flash) wore Burberry check head-to-toe but with a crystal mask and heaps of Bulgari.

Even the traditionalists got in on the fun. In a sparkly ball gown by Maria Grazia Chiuri for Christian Dior, Maya Hawke was so much the modern princess that she tossed on a gold crown—why not? Likewise, Katherine Langford amped up her crimson Rodarte with matching eyeshadow and pearls in her hair. And then there was Dua Lipa, Barbie-chic in hot pink Miu Miu, cheeky cool and seriously hot—in other words, the AMA dress code!
