The blurred lip trend has truly taken the world of celebrity by storm: Oscar winner Jessie Buckley, Chase Infiniti, Charli xcx, Mia Goth, and Love Story’s Sarah Pidgeon have all sported the soft Cupid’s bow and feathered lip line. Romantic and real-feeling, it subsumed Q1’s interest in the harder shapes and shades of 2016 beauty to triumph as the style of a modern day it-girl. Amal Clooney, queen of classic beauty and glamour, has decided to test it out.

Stepping out in Milan for a Cartier event, Clooney looked as sleek and chic as ever: wearing a black boatneck top, a croc-effect leather pencil skirt cinched at the waist with a belt by Elie Saab, and rounded square sunglasses, her makeup was radiant. “I wanted the makeup to be soft with very earth tones,” says celebrity makeup artist and hair stylist Dimitris Giannetos, who used Charlotte Tilbury products to achieve the look, “a touch of color on the cheek and lip.”

Giannetos (who often crafts looks for Clooney as well as Kim Kardashian) used the Foxy Brown and Coral Kiss shades of lip pencils by Charlotte Tilbury for her on-trend (but still very much timeless, à la Amal Clooney) lip combo, defining her outer lines and going over her Cupid’s bow to create an ethereal halo effect. The rest of her visage was signature for the human right’s lawyer, with a smoky brown eye and warm bronze cheek. Her hair, also by Giannetos—who has been announced as a global ambassador of Great Lengths Hair Extensions—was given a caramel color refresh, voluminous and tousled to one side—he used the L’Oreal Paris EverPure Iron Sleek products to boost her super shiny blowout.

The soft-focus lip style feels very much in line with the ’90s revival, and has been popularized by makeup artist Nina Park, with Hailey Bieber’s Rhode chunky lip liners making the blurred lip accessible and easy. Sleek and clean, it’s a super achievable look on and off the red carpet. Make like Amal, and blend, blend, blend!
