I love mixing materials. The pink satin bed in the middle of the store works because of the raw plaster on the walls and ceiling. There is also something kind of old-school about it that you see in old American motels or in the South of France. I always like to mix American style with Frenchy elements.

I love pictures and photography. I made a wall with some frames to put pictures and posters which I will change based on the season or even on my mood. This makes for an easy update! For the moment I found a pillow with Claude François’s face on it (an iconic French singer). I haven’t found the right poster yet but this pillow is just as good, if not better.

The most important thing for me is that the place is comfy and warm! A great way to create a cozy setting is with carpets in warm hues [hers is fuchsia on her second-floor mezzanine], knit rugs, shearling throws, and touches of velvet. Adding rich curtains as well as accent pillows help create a nesting ambiance. Juxtapose cozy pieces with a light, airy, happy ambiance. We added mirrors and metallic elements to reflect the natural soft light and give it a touch of shine. I hate fake lights and abrasive overhead lights. But for a shop, some small spotlights were obligatory.

I want people to feel at home when they arrive at Chez Pichard, which is an extension of my own home. There’s an antique column shelving where I display objects that my dearest and most talented friends have made, such as vinyls, sculptures, and a book from my artist friend, Chloe Wise. This gives it a personal touch, making the Pichard girl really feel at home.

I also wanted to create the feeling of being in someone’s room and wanting to look through all their stuff—it’s much more exciting to have to open drawers and closets to have a look, rather than having everything already exposed. The cabinets are also a reference to the movie Blue Velvet, a wink to David Lynch who has been a big source of inspiration for me.
