After a year crippled by the pandemic, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation stood its ground with a rousing evening. The event marked the BCRF’s second virtual event, at which both hopes and funds were raised to bring us one step closer to finding a cure for breast cancer. This writer took a front-row seat in her living room.
Host Elizabeth Hurley, Global Ambassador of The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign, set off a heartwarming tone for the night in. Before I knew it, the sweet sounds of “Cabaret” from the musical Cabaret filled my speakers. Sung by a star-studded ensemble including breast cancer survivor and BCRF Advisory Board Member Mandy Gonzalez, Tony Award-nominee Kathryn Gallagher, Nicole Van Giesen, and many others.
One of the most touching moments came a performance by theater director, teacher, singer, songwriter, and breast cancer survivor Miriam Dance. “I call myself a survivor, and there have been various things that I’ve had to overcome, but I just want to encourage anyone out there who may be listening to just not give up.”
Leonard Lauder, whose late wife, Evelyn Lauder, founded the BCRF, also had celebratory remarks to share. Sitting in his home, Lauder noted the monumental feat brought on by the evening. “This is the 20th year of this great event. It gets better every year because of all of you. We miss seeing you all. You’re supporting the research that will change the world forever.”
The musically themed night spurred on with a performance by Paul Shaffer and Motown legend Valerie Simpson, with “You Make Me Feel Brand New.” BCRF’s Founding Scientific Director, Dr. Larry Norton, even joined on bass as his words on renewal echoed on, “This is a good time, in addition to celebrating our accomplishments and celebrating generosity, to have a sense of renewal.”
The night culminated with Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka introducing the one and only, Sir Elton John. Sitting at a glossy piano wearing a fuschia blazer with his ever-present rose-colored glasses, Elton began singing his late friend, Evelyn Lauder’s favorite song. “Blue-jean baby, L.A. lady, Seamstress for the band..." A living room dance party soon ensued as donations rolled in by way of text messages. The grand finale came in the form of the announcement for the amount of funds raised to aid in breast cancer research: $6 million.
