“This is my third year going [to Day for Night]. It’s one of my favorites. I love that there are light installations. It’s different from any other music festival I’ve been to. It’s kind of gritty, but a really good community and a lot of fun.”

“We had a work party on Thursday night, so I packed in about 10 minutes on Friday morning. I opened my suitcase this morning and just hoped that I remembered to pack all the right things, so I wasn’t thinking about my outfit at all.”

“I come here every year. I always like to try to do something different. Last year, I wore all silver. The year before that, I wore an astronaut suit. I bought this jumpsuit on Amazon, bought some LED strips, and I got a big-ass battery pack. I’m ready to go all night.”

“I don’t ski at all, but I hate the cold and I didn’t want to have any coats and jackets to carry around. So I just figure one skisuit and I’m done.”

Gonzalez: “My outfit is Rules of Evidence. It’s actually a brand that she started. She hand-sewed all of the butterflies on here. And my shoes are called bunny boots. I believe they were worn by Air Force pilots. They have little gauges on the side that allow air to go into the boot when they hit G-force, and then it fills up with air and holds blood in their feet. I just think they’re really comfy.”
Royer: “I got my jacket from Ikea. It’s like a blanket. And this shirt and these shoes, I think, are from a jail. I go to this thrift store and they always have jail clothes that were donated, so that’s where I got these.”

“I actually forgot that I’m wearing a cowboy hat. When I got off the plane, the first thing I wanted to do was go to a thrift store and find a ‘Don’t Mess With Texas’ shirt, so I forced my friends to hop in an Uber with me. We went to a Goodwill and didn’t find a ‘Don’t Mess With Texas’ shirt, but I found this for $4 and I haven’t taken it off since.”

“I bought this suit from Value Village for, like, $12. It’s Liz Baker. I looked it up and I think that Liz Baker was sold at J. C. Penney in the ‘80s and ‘90s. I wanted to wear a suit. I bought it for a performance, and we were all wearing suits and I was like, all right, well, let’s just find one, and this one was kind of big and goofy, like David Byrne. It’s one of my favorite colors.”

“I’m part of an artist collaborative called Hovver. The installation is the giant rings downstairs, the three rings. My art partner and I, Chris Lunney, started collaborating together maybe five years ago. And that specific piece downstairs, the 10-foot version of it, has been in the works for six months. I’m actually wearing a jumpsuit that was made personally made by Chris’s mom. She made me this custom jumpsuit out of Italian wool specifically for the festival.”

“I just moved back to Texas from New York City last year. I was there [in New York] for four years, but now I’m back living in midtown Houston. Houston style has that Western flair, that Western retro flair. I grew up thrifting and was really into vintage but also a splash of luxury fashion like Fendi, Prada, and Gucci, so my personal style is blending that all together—it represents a lot of what Houston means and what I picked up over the years from living here.”

“This is my mom’s traditional Vietnamese outfit. It’s called áo dài. It’s just a traditional Vietnamese dress. It’s, like, $4. I like to wear it because it stands out, but it’s still warm. In fact, you know the long tunic? That’s started from these guys. It’s from this garment.”

“I found this at a really cool vintage trailer in Austin, and it’s from this company called Miss Elliott California which is this super-’60s, -’70s extra-California kind of attire. And these sunglasses are by my friend’s company. His name is Paul Giovary, and it’s called Second Look.”

“We did a performance at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum here in Houston. It’s the only one that exists in the world. And we did the Buffalo Soldiers national anthem for their gala. It’s just three of us [in the band]. Me, my friend Kyle, and James. We’re from Houston, Third Ward, Texas. They gifted us these jackets. And we always be in boots, baby. We in Texas, you know what I’m saying? We stay in our boots.”
