As the night wore on, guests enjoyed lemon grass chicken and yuzu plum mousse cake. Palm Royale won the outstanding comedy series prize while the musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring Jennifer Lopez, was celebrated for outstanding wide release film. Quinta Brunson of Abbott Elementary was also honored with the Vanguard Award. “I love gay people. I love you so much. You mess with gay people, you mess with me,” she laughed.

Liza Minnelli even made a rare—and surprise—appearance to accept the inaugural Liza Minnelli Storyteller Award, commemorating her new memoir Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! “You make me so proud because you’re strong and you stand up for what you believe in,” she told the room, which included Cara Delevingne, Laverne Cox, Chris Appleton, Camila Mendes, Lili Reinhart, and Sheryl Lee Ralph. “It's so nice to be here with you,” she concluded, moments before she was presented with a cake in honor of her upcoming 80th birthday.

After the show, Lovato was catching her breath and ruminating on an epic night. Next up, she’ll embark on a whirlwind 18-city tour beginning April 13 to promote her new album. “I can’t wait to see my fans and to have a good time every night,” she smiled. “I’m going to sing new songs and also songs they already know. It’ll be a blast.”

Lovato, who previously received the Vanguard Award in 2016, concluded: “Nights like this are a reminder that when we support each other and continue to tell our stories authentically, we can create real change.”
