Following the viral Tumblr post known as “no its becky,” which called Taylor Swift’s identity into question—was the superstar actually a pot-smoking high school student named Becky in disguise?—Swift got in on the fun and posted a picture of herself wearing a yellow tee referencing the meme close to the release of her 1989 album in 2014. She later stepped out wearing the shirt with a short plaid skirt.

What do you wear after you are accused of beating your housekeeper with a phone? If you happen to be Naomi Campbell—who was summoned to court for the aforementioned charges back in 2006—you’d wear a shirt that reads “Naomi Hit Me” on the front and “I loved it” on the back. Snap!

Jay Z’s 2013 hit “Tom Ford” was, well, an ode to the designer Tom Ford. In response to the rapper’s lyrics, Tom Ford designed a jersey-inspired shift dress covered in orange sequins emblazoned with the names “Tom Ford” and “Molly.” It took three to complete this fashion-troll triangle: Beyoncé wore the piece on her Mrs. Carter Show tour in 2014.

This past summer, Céline Dion prompted a media frenzy with her lighthearted wardrobe troll: The singer stepped out in the Vetements Titanic hoodie, an homage to the award-winning song “My Heart Will Go On” she sang for the film’s soundtrack.

With a little help from Marc Jacobs, Winona Ryder was able to pull off one of the chicest moments in the history of courtroom drama. The actress was caught shoplifting more than $5,500 worth of clothing from the Beverly Hills Saks Fifth Avenue in 2001. Among the pilfered items was a $760 Marc Jacobs cashmere sweater. But Ryder—a longtime muse of Jacobs—used the opportunity to put the designer in the spotlight: She sported several modest pieces by the designer to court, including a dress and two jackets from Marc Jacobs Fall 2001 collectsion.

Before social-media savvy trolls such as Sarah Snyder, there was Paris Hilton. The hard-partying heiress would purposefully drop paparazzi bait, often showing up to events in a rotating collectsion of self-referential tees that boasted phrases including “Stop Being Desperate” and “Teenage Millionaire.”

Before the election, Rihanna stepped out in a shirt printed with Hillary Clinton’s image. But the singer didn’t let her support for the Democratic presidential candidate stop there: She soon followed up the look with a T-shirt of herself wearing the Hillary Clinton tee. Meta-chic, indeed.

Remember that epic line “Becky with the good hair” from Beyoncé’s Lemonade album? All fingers seemed to point to Rita Ora, at least that’s how Beyoncé’s superfans, known collectsively as the BeyHive, saw things. And for good reason: Ora stepped out in the same Gucci dress Beyoncé wore in the video for “Formation,” shortly after the record was released. The singer stoked the hive’s ire again by Snapchatting a picture of herself wearing a sheer bra featuring strategically placed lemons.
