And so, to Paris, where the tectonic plates of a historic reshuffling of creative directors is grinding into place for Paris Fashion Week.

In the days ahead, Matthieu Blazy will unveil his vision at Chanel; Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez at Loewe; Pierpaolo Piccioli at Balenciaga; Duran Lantink at Jean Paul Gaultier; and Miguel Castro Freitas at Mugler. From Jonathan Anderson’s long-anticipated Dior womenswear debut to Glenn Martens’s first ready-to-wear collectsion at Maison Margiela, the stakes feel all the higher. Reputations will be made. Some might be broken.

The challenge for these designers is not only to define the look of the moment, but to draw the right people—and the right headlines—towards it. Which is where the guests come in. Already, this season has drawn in some serious star power—Gwyneth Paltrow at Michael Kors in New York, Emily Ratajkowski at H&M in London, a constellation of Hollywood names at Demna’s Gucci debut in Milan, Miranda Priestly—yet it’s in Paris, the capital of all fashion capitals, where celebrity, spectacle, and the collision of the two, will reach its peak. So far, we’ve witnessed a glamorous reunion for Kim and Kylie on the Margiela frow, Jenna Ortega in her gothic rhythm at Givenchy, and the Hilton sisters taking Vivienne Westwood. Further, Balenciaga brought two Devil Wears Prada assistants together—Anne Hathaway and Simone Ashley—and Valentino was a starry affair with laughes shared between Colman Domingo and Pamela Anderson.
