In with the Old: Stars Celebrate the New Decade in Retro Silhouettes

2020 kickstarts a promising new decade of fashion, but many stylish stars began the year by drawing inspiration from the past. During early January’s award season parties and film festivals, we’ve seen a resurgence in retro dressing with stars reaching for tried-and-true silhouettes and classic suiting. At the Palm Springs Film Festival, screen legends went for old Hollywood glamour, including Jennifer Lopez, who arrived to receive her Spotlight Award in Richard Quinn’s sumptuous spring/summer 2020 florals. Pastel pink with a sweeping train, her gown echoed the stylized shapes of the 1950s. Charlize Theron took the concept a step further in Dior’s micro-check bustier and matching skirt. The vintage vibe of her belted separates got a modern update thanks to the transparent black mesh top she wore beneath.

Elsewhere, tailoring came to the forefront. At W Magazine’s Best Performances bash, Booksmart star Kaitlyn Dever made a splash in a crimson Armani blazer opened to reveal a matching bralette, while Phoebe Waller-Bridge dazzled at AFI’s fete in Ralph and Russo’s satin tuxedo. Lena Waithe continued her collaboration with the bespoke tailor Rich Fresh, bringing cool to Variety’s Directors to Watch brunch with a slate grey version accented by a navy side stripe. Even Bella Hadid got in on the fun—who else would have the attitude to pull off a three-piece suit in glossy black leather?
