Last Week Stars Found a New Mood for Evening

Why wear a ball gown for a big night when fashion has of late served up so many more comfortable and minimal options? The world’s most stylish are trading volume and ornamentation for glamour of a different, more modern stripe. For example, at FGI’s annual Night of Stars dinner, Kim Kardashian West (with Kanye!) presented the superstar award to Rick Owens wearing an asymmetrical top and skirt by the designer that was all shine, skintight and literally dazzling. Elsewhere the little black dress was out in full force: in leather from JW Anderson for Loewe on Amber Valletta; in velvet and ruffles on Zoe Saldana from Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy; with a Frankenstein-adorned shirt-and-skirt twist by Miuccia Prada on Dree Hemingway in Rome.

Dark beauty may have been the week’s dominant theme, but there were other alluring and subtle hues to be found on the red carpet. Consider Sylvia Hoeks’s dress of cornflower blue by Georges Hobeika for the premiere of See: Transparent and studded with Swarovski crystals, the gown was an ethereal and yet autumnal alternative.
