Last Week, Stars Defied Dress Codes—And Won

Dress codes no longer carry the same weight they once did, but certain occasions come with a set of unwritten rules. Everyone knows how one is supposed to dress for weddings or premieres, but that just makes any break from tradition more interesting. Last week, the world’s most stylish took a break: Serena Williams wore an eye-popping ensemble by Off-White and Nike to celebrate women’s empowerment at the French Open; the striped windbreaker and asymmetrical skirt stood out against the red clay of Roland Garros, thanks to graphic lines and uplifting slogans. (Odds are the crowd knew Williams to be a “championne,” but Abloh spelled it out just in case.)

In London to promote her new album, Miley Cyrus took a deep dive into vintage. The Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche vest she wore while out on the town was a welcome ’60s throwback that spoke to her penchant for hippie chic (and sustainability). Likewise, at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, Julianne Moore was a cool vision in an oversize blazer and printed dress from Givenchy’s Pre-Fall 2019 collectsion amidst the preppy fare and big hats.

Even the most intimate events called for a new approach. At her wedding to film producer Dimitri Rassam, Monegasque beauty Charlotte Casiraghi chose the simplicity of a brocade Saint Laurent minidress over the standard princess gown. In doing so, she raised the nuptial-fashion bar for the new generation of royals.
