At any given time, there’s an F1 Grand Prix going on somewhere in the world. This week, it’s all about the races in Japan, and Anya Taylor-Joy dropped by with her Super Mario Galaxy Movie castmates.
How people choose to dress for the paddock runs the gamut, but Taylor-Joy made sure to pack her leathers for the Japan tour. The actor opted for a colorful leather corset top with blue, red, and yellow piping from Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring 1991 collectsion, and paired the body-contouring piece with tight, low-waisted black leather trousers. She added oval Jimmy Fairly glasses, red and Perspex stilettos, plus Tiffany&Co earrings and a diamond stoned ring. The actor greeted her friend, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton (who she turned out to support at the last Monaco Grand Prix, too), and posed with castmates that included Jack Black and Chris Pratt.
Taylor-Joy was also joined by her husband Malcolm McRae, who forwent the leathers in favor of a breezy ivory shirt and suit pants. Often, the couple will be in lockstep when it comes to matching each other’s style, but a day at the races saw them diverge.
It was also a very different look from what we’ve seen of Taylor-Joy’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie press tour wardrobe. Styled by Ryan Hastings, the actor has been playing around with the super feminine aesthetics of her iconic character Princess Peach. So far, she’s sported a dusty pink custom bandeau and fishtail set by Jacquemus, topped off with a gargantuan headpiece, a floral apron dress by August Barron, and a bow-adorned top paired with low-rise jeans by Erdem. At the Kyoto premiere, she slipped into a whimsical custom Dior dress with a hooped skirt and added 3D cherry blossom embellishments. The Anya Taylor-Joy to Princess Peach style pipeline has found a natural meeting point in these femme and fun looks—but breaking for some killer vintage JPG felt right for the Suzuka paddock.
