The beauty of the greasy, smoky black lids Julie de Libran requested for her Spring Sonia Rykiel collectsion is that they’ll just keep getting better as the night wears on. Also worth a second look: those soft, center-parted ’70s waves. If you don’t have time for a curling iron, sleep in a braid and brush out for a similarly airy texture.

Wearing a classic, exacting French twist to a New Year’s party is asking for trouble. A deconstructed French twist, however, is a completely different story. Secure a low ponytail, twist, and pin, then haphazardly tie on a piece of grosgrain ribbon for that extra touch of uninhibited festiveness.

Matte lipstick has become mainstream over the past few seasons, but Aaron de Mey’s Plasticine lip at Nina Ricci has much more champagne-clanking appeal. Pro tip: Mattify your lipstick with a light dusting of translucent powder before adding a coat of high-shine red gloss to lock down the color.

The I Dream of Jeannie–esque updo has never gone out of style, but Balmain’s version—paired with bronzed, sculpted cheekbones, statement earrings, and fierce girl-squad confidence—was born for an up-all-night dance party.

Glitter: It was made for New Year’s Eve. Too bad it’s such a mess to work with. But makeup artist Val Garland’s trick backstage at Giambattista Valli to keep the glitter on your lids, not all over your face, is something of a game changer: Just blend your favorite flecks with MAC’s Mixing Medium, dip your brush into the mixture, and apply along the crease of your eyelid for a sparkle that will last well past midnight.

You can also have a controlled glitter moment by applying lash glue as an eyeliner with a small, fine-tipped cotton swab (Muji’s are the best). Then press your flecks of choice on top of the adhesive. Makeup artist Peter Philips used a dark blue at Dries Van Noten, but any shade will work.

A subtle glimmer on the inner corner of the eyes is a soft way to make a big impact. It was barely perceptible—but still captivating—on the models and friends Alexander Wang had walk in his last show for the French house.

Fake lashes are sort of a New Year’s mainstay at this point. But don’t bother with the strip lashes this year: Take a page out of makeup artist Lucia Pieroni’s book and just add long individual mink lashes to your natural hairs, spaced a few millimeters apart, for a doll-like effect à la the Marni show.

. . . Or you could borrow Pieroni’s idea from Mary Katrantzou and use individual lashes just in the center of the lids—on the upper and lower lash line—before painting them bright aqua or cobalt blue for an unexpected, wide-eyed stare.

. . . Or reach for a fine-point liquid black liner (like Tom Ford’s), and draw on two-dimensional lash spikes resembling Pat McGrath’s graphic handiwork at Louis Vuitton.

. . . Or you could make like McGrath at Maison Margiela and use a finger’s-width swipe of liquid silver pigment to draw in lashes a quarter of the way down your cheek. (For a glam-rock twist, leave one eye completely bare.)

There truly is no wrong occasion for a total Sade homage. But the fact that the R&B legend’s slicked-back, braided ponytail and red lipstick got Phoebe Philo’s seal of approval is even more of a reason to wear the full look out tomorrow night. BYO gold hoops.

The difference with this version of the red lip is its soft-focus finishand its pairing with feathered hair and smudged black eyeliner drawn only to the middle of the lash line for an eye-opening effect—all of which says, “Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1989.”
