I’ve relied on a Spiewak parka to get me through just about every brutal New York winter for the last 10 years, and this fall I have my eye on their traditional pilot shearling jacket. I really can’t think of anything cozier than this.

Outerwear is typically where I like my “fashion,” so this is kind of tough . . . but I have great sentimental attachment to my waxed Barbour jacket. I’ve had it since boarding school (its patina gets better looking—if technically less water repellent—with age!) and it has seen me through many a drippy early fall and spring since.

Being from Australia, snow is still a novelty for me. So instead of navigating around the icy-cold powder, I much prefer to walk straight through it—which is where my Hunter boots come in handy. They keep me dry but certainly not warm. So each season I buy a few pairs of their shearling insoles and thermal socks, and just like that my waterproof boots become nice and toasty.

I have a little navy quilted jacket from J.Crew that’s secretly amazing—it keeps you so much warmer than a denim jacket or blazer in the fall, but you won’t overheat, and it’s slim enough to wear under another coat in the winter. I relied on it pretty heavily during New York Fashion Week in February, when the wind chill was below zero, and wore it under a puffy down coat. It’s starting to look a little worn out, so I could use this black version from Lands’ End (although, I love the floral one, too).

It’s a recent find, but the Adidas Z.N.E. hoodie in white is the perfect topper for all occasions. It works with turtlenecks and wide-leg trousers just as seamlessly as a T-shirt and jeans combo. And should it start to rain, my coiffure won’t get messed up, thanks to the structured hood.

Alpha Industries’s N-3B parka in navy with orange lining is the best winter jacket out there. You could go out in a bikini and this jacket and still be warm, though should you want to wear real clothes underneath, the color matches quite well with A.P.C.’s shade of navy.

This is the most comfortable sweatshirt and only costs $15. Not only is it the perfect in-between fit, but it oddly looks good with most things I own, too, from casual denim to a more tailored trouser.

I’ve been a proud Patagonia-phile since my teens. I tend to favor the men’s stuff, because the colors are more on point and the cuts are cleaner. I pretty much live in a fluffy R3 fleece hoodie (which appears to no longer be available) on chilly days when I’m working from home, and if it’s really cold outside, I leave it peeking out from beneath more polished coats as a super-warm styling trick.
These men’s fleece pants would be a cozy winter alternative to a track pant, and the navy color makes them chic. Plus, they’re 80 to 85 percent recycled fiber!

This Uniqlo light puffer that can be turned into a bag is so perfect for in-between weather, but I especially like to layer it under my nicer coats in winter for extra warmth. I got that idea from my French friend who told me all the ladies in Paris do it.

My go-to outerwear every fall and winter is a lamby shearling Patagonia fleece. I can wear it on its own in the fall and come December, I wear it under all of my winter coats!

I wear a down Pendleton jacket. It’s so cozy and keeps me warm all winter long. The hood comes in handy when the snow starts to fall.

Hasn’t “unfashionable outerwear” become fashion outerwear now, thanks to Balenciaga and Vetements? Regardless of it being fashion or non-fashion, I will never grow tired of a classic yellow rain slicker. This menswear one by Penfield is my go-to layering piece this fall and winter. It’s so durable and practical. There is something nostalgic and kiddie about the color that I especially love.
