One of the many upsides to summer is the low-maintenance mandate for hair. What else are beach waves if not a call to rinse, air-dry, and repeat? But after a few months spent weathering the elements—the moisture-sapping sea salt, chlorine, and hours of unrelenting sun—a certain degree of wear and tear is inevitable. Come fall, most hair types have suffered some kind of damage, says hairstylist Mark Townsend, whose home base in Los Angeles offers an up-close vantage point. The key, he explains, is to zero in on treatments that can “repair damage and bring back the health of the hair.”
