Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge Opened the 2024 Tribeca Festival

On Wednesday night in downtown Manhattan, the Tribeca Film Festival kicked off its annual event with a screening of Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge–profiling the evolution of DVF and her eponymous brand. While she’s best known for her iconic wrap dress, the documentary unwraps some of the most intimate moments of her life, and focuses on female empowerment, family, and, of course, fashion.

Prior to the screening, executive producers Fabiola Beracasa Beckman and Tracy Aftergood shared with Vogue that the three-year project highlights the influence of multigenerational relationships–from DVF’s youth as the daughter of a Holocaust survivor to marrying a prince and immersing herself in the extravagant lifestyle that came with it to exploring motherhood while building her brand’s empire.

Friends and industry folks came out to celebrate the premiere of the film, some of which included Karlie Kloss, Selma Blair, Rupi Kaur, Lucy Hale, and AnnaSophia Robb, along with the festival’s CEO and co-founder Jane Rosenthal.

Following the screening, Gayle King moderated a discussion with DVF and the women behind the magic–including co-directors and producers Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton, as well as executive producers Fabiola Beracasa Beckman and Tracy Aftergood. The conversation took the audience through key moments of the film, including its ethos, overall takeaways, and DVF’s willingness to share her story. Fabiola noted that she approached DVF in 2017 with the idea of a documentary, and she was quickly shut down. But, with a bit of convincing and years past, the proposition was accepted. “I wanted to share the inspiration that she gave me with the whole world–with women and girls in particular,” said Beracasa Beckman, adding “[DVF] is a woman full of contradictions, and she proved that no one could be pigeonholed into a single label.”

Movie-goers then headed over to the Tribeca Grill for a post-film fête, filled with wine, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and photo ops to commemorate the opening night of the festival. Guests came together to celebrate both the documentary and the start of the festival. Various events and screenings will be taking place through Sunday, June 16, at a collectsion of venues across New York City

The documentary will exclusively be streaming globally on Hulu on June 25.
