Garage Magazine Fêted Cover Star Zendaya With a Dinner in L.A.

Last night editor in chief of Garage magazine Mark Guiducci and stylist Law Roach hosted a dinner in honor of Zendaya and the artist Simone Leigh. The event follows their collaboration with Garage that produced the magazine’s latest cover, which imagines a new vision of black womanhood. For the magazine, it’s a series of artistic interventions that will hopefully continue.

The small dinner, which took place in the penthouse of the Chateau Marmont, mixed the art world with Hollywood—and some much-need rain.

Leigh wore this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner Christopher John Rogers, and Zendaya sported St. John. Guests included MOCA Los Angeles director Klaus Biesenbach, Jordan Wolfson, Mj Rodriguez, Alia Shawkat, Cleo Wade, Moses Sumney, Kilo Kish, Spike Jonze, Alex Israel, Jennifer Guidi, and designers Laura Mulleavy and Greg Chait.

Guiducci toasted Leigh and Zendaya’s extraordinary work (individually and in their collaboration) and ended with a quote from Zendaya, which was pulled from her cover story (a conversation with Thelma Golden, the director and chief curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem): “I just want to continue to expand myself and see what I can be capable of and who I can transform into. It’s scary, and it’s hard, and it’s terrifying, and that, I think, is the beauty in all of it—just kind of being a little bit terrified and getting to the other side. I want to continue to be put outside of my comfort zone, because comfort is the enemy of progress.”
