Giveon’s Epic Grammys Look Reimagined the Chanel Tweed Suit

As one of the most nominated performers at 2022’s Grammy Awards ceremony, Giveon stepped into the MGM Grand as a winner. Up for several of the night’s big prizes, the R&B performer had all eyes on him, so naturally, he wanted an ensemble worthy of all the attention. Instead of seeking out menswear’s usual suspects, Giveon and stylist Yashua Simmons went for the unexpected: a bespoke Chanel look. Crafted from the aptly named “black sequin fantasy” tweed, his bomber jacket and matching pants were among the evening’s best. Capturing Giveon’s sleek personal style and the house’s 112 years of luxury, the Chanel suit was everything the star had hoped for. “Chanel is classic, timeless, and elegant,” shared Giveon post-show. “I wanted my Grammys look to communicate that as well.”

For Simmons, who has worked with the star since the start of his career, Grammy night was about showcasing developing Giveon’s signatures. “In collaborating with Giveon [we’re] establishing a visual language that defines this particular moment,” says Simmons. “We share similar ideas on aesthetics, and it’s nice to be able to tap into that when working together.” After chatting about the outfit, the pair decided they wanted to avoid standard-issue tuxedos. “This felt right [because] it subverts the traditional tux,” says Simmons. “It’s a modern take on the suit and a new interpretation of the Chanel tweed suit. The Chanel team provided swatches and patterns from the house’s archives, which we were able to reference to create this one-of-a-kind look.”

Given that Chanel is primarily known for its womenswear, having Virginie Viard create a custom menswear piece was special. The look’s intricate details added to the thrill, including the ‘Perles Intemporelles’ necklace, which featured a mix of cultured pearls set in white gold inlay with diamonds. “The jewelry completed the look in a way that references all the Chanel codes, yet it’s fresh, modern, and new,” says Simmons. “The sequins woven into the tweed just gave [the outfit] the red carpet mark. The Chanel team is a wonderful collectsion of masters, and they streamlined everything for a seamless process by understanding exactly what we wanted to express and how to bring that to life.”

Once Giveon got the chance to try everything out, he was equally impressed. “I’m obsessed with every aspect, but if I had to choose, I would say the silhouette is my favorite element,” he says. “The shape of the pieces is beautiful, and they worked perfectly with my frame.” Of course, his Grammy night wasn’t just about clothes. With seven nominations under his belt, Giveon enjoyed a celebratory evening dedicated to artistic accomplishment. “This is the highest form of recognition in my world,” he says. “I was overcome with gratitude and inspiration [to be nominated]. Chanel is one of the most prestigious fashion houses globally, so to know that they chose me to represent them fills me with honor and pride.”
