Jamie Mizrahi Launched a Line with Rent the Runway and Decided to Celebrate With a Dinner

Celebrity stylist Jamie Mizrahi has had a fashion-filled few months. Fresh off the launch of The Kit, a range of functional undergarments, last night saw the launch of her first clothing collectsion, an 18-piece capsule line designed for the online clothing rental platform Rent the Runway. Mizrahi, who counts Katy Perry, Leighton Meester, Billie Lourd, and Jessica Alba among her clients, gathered a fashionable party of friends, family, and clients for a candlelit alfresco event in her own backyard to celebrate the collectsion, which will be available online next week.

Guests, dressed in pieces from the line—named Sweet Baby Jamie after Mizrahi's Instagram handle,—were treated to a dinner of sea bass and short ribs at a flower-filled table. Fellow stylist and business partner, Simone Harouche swapped stories with Nicole Richie, Sarah Meyer Michaelson, and Sarah Riff while Nina Dobrev (wearing a black velvet collar dress), chatted to Sophia La Porta and Rebecca Rittenhouse. The hit of the night, however, was undeniably a houndstooth overcoat as Fall had fully arrived in Los Angeles. “And the black turtleneck sweater,” Mizrahi pointed out. “Nicole stole mine and I think four other people are wearing it. It’s an essential.”

Mizrahi was approached by Rent The Runway’s cofounder Jennifer Hyman earlier this year to work on the company’s first foray into ‘tastemaker lines’, exclusive collectsions only available through on the platform. “Jamie is my favorite stylist ever and I always dreamed of working with her,” said Hyman of the collaboration. “We came with data around what millions of women are wearing and what they are looking for in terms of fit and fabrication and she’s come in with the design aesthetic.”

“When RTR contacted me I was like ok I’ve heard of it maybe I should do something with them. The sustainability of renting is so important and I think something that we are going to see more of in fashion,” said Mizrahi. “I went on the site and I ordered two Proenza Schouler dresses, a Marni sweater, and a pair of Oscar de la Renta earrings that I still have.” Prompting Richie to shout out, “I don’t think that’s how it works!”

The collectsion, inspired by Mizrahi’s everyday wardrobe, features plenty of the slip skirts and big sweaters, paired with oversized coats that make up her signature look—a style that clearly vibed with the assembled group. “I wanted to make sure that everything in the collectsion worked well together and could be styled in all different ways from day-to-night and work-to-dinner,” Mizrahi explained as the evening came to a close. “There is something in there for everyone I hope but it's also what I'm putting myself and my clients in this fall and winter.”
