“My very active father raised me to enjoy team sports as much as he did, which meant I was playing township softball, soccer, and basketball long before I made the starting varsity teams of all three sports in high school. I probably spent the most time honing my skills as a small, scrappy point guard, but I was the best at softball—thanks in large part to the hours of grounders and pop-ups my dad used to hit to me in our backyard. These days, I prefer the endorphin kick of solo swimming and running. And while I haven’t played in a fast-pitch softball game in years, I’m ready to go in should my number get called.”

“I was riding before I was walking! Here I am, age 2, about to compete in a horse show in Vermont. When asked the horse’s name, I apparently responded, ‘Mommy.’ ”

“I was in ballet/tap/jazz from the ages of 3 to 8. I feel like I retained a somewhat decent sense of rhythm and (every once in a while) posture from this rigorous training. This particular recital look was set to Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Physical.’ Yes, that is an LA Gear visor. So glad you asked.”

“The obvious cool of skating has always appealed to me—surely influencing my emo bangs and tube sock styling choices—though I myself have never been cool enough to practice outside of an empty parking garage or quiet street. Traveling at a pace too fast to eat a piece of cake always feels like a terrifying risk to my squishy face and carefully crafted veneers.”

“This is my School of American Ballet audition photo. I would say that ballet shaped the way I approach fitness now, post-dancing. I prefer yoga and Pilates classes that promote lengthening of the body rather than bulking, to create a lean yet toned silhouette.”

“To this day, my favorite way to exercise is going for a long run. This is a photo of me after soccer practice. I started playing very young and played competitively through high school. One thing I do miss is getting up for team runs at 6:00 a.m. every day—but the ridiculous shin guard tans, not so much.”

“This photo dates to a few years after Flashdance hit screens, but the leg warmers, sweatshirt, and lack of pants are right on target. While this particular move seems lifted from the teapot song, I did eventually graduate to more complicated choreography—and, thanks to New York-area studios like Mark Morris and Steps, I still sneak off to the barre whenever I can.”

“I started cheerleading competitively when I was in the second grade (that’s me, top left!) and continued all the way through high school. I hung up my pom-poms after graduation, but I still follow the same series of dynamic stretching moves pre- and post-workout and do a core-strengthening conditioning routine that includes things like forearm planks and flutter kicks. They never did do much for my toe-touch game, but so long as I can fit into my varsity uniform from senior year, I’ll give it a V for victory.”

“Here I am performing Swan Lake (on the right). My love for tutus, glitter, and pink has not stopped since my first ballet class, and, as gross as it might sound, I still love my calluses!”

“Though I’ve dabbled in everything from Irish dance to cross-country running, taking first in the girls’ high jump at my inter-school track meet two years in a row (fourth and fifth grades) remains the pinnacle of my athletic achievements. But, as my subtle DIY gym uniform ‘flair’ suggests, I was maybe more concerned with nailing the sporty look than I was with actually winning! Some things never change.”

“I always wanted to do ballet, and I think this is when I got my first little strawberry-flavored taste of performing onstage. I still have fantasies of going pro, but realistically I know that ship has sailed. At least I’ll always have Ballet Beautiful to satisfy my dance-fitness itch!"

“My years of dance training made me the fearless dad dancer I am today. No shame.”

“This was one of my first—and last—forays into tutus. But I still like barre class!”

“This photo was taken when I was around 10 years old, after a soccer tournament in my hometown in Sweden. I was one of the goal-makers that day, and I remember being so happy and proud! I absolutely loved playing soccer, and it taught me many good lessons about fitness—for example, that sports should be a reward and something that you enjoy doing, not punishment. Today, I try to mix up my days at the gym with some yoga, boxing, intervals—and, on a great day, soccer!”

“True story: I spent an entire season on a youth basketball team without once making contact with the ball, as I was petrified of the game. I quickly learned that non-contact sports suit me best and have graduated from after-school ballet classes at my neighborhood dance studio to after-work Ballet Beautiful classes in my living room to stay in shape.”
