Inside Tom Ford’s Met Gala After-Party—the Most Exclusive of the Night

At last night’s Met Gala, Tom Ford was more than just a guest. To start, the designer and filmmaker was one of nine directors enlisted by Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu curator in charge of The Costume Institute, to design their own mise-en-scènes within “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” which opened last night. (In his room, Ford interprets and retells the famous Battle of Versailles with an inspired, Matrix-like choreography of mannequins.) And after the gala, Ford continued to make his mark on the night by hosting an A-list party at the Carlyle Hotel.

At the close of the Met Gala, just as guests departed the museum, their nights were really just halfway done. After a possible quick change, where gowns were swapped for trainless mini dresses, attendees had their picks between several after-parties. Though only the most starry were invited past the velvet ropes at Ford’s fete—if there was a single party to go to, this was the one.

Hailey Bieber arrived, descending from a van with her full Saint Laurent look. Newlywed Brooklyn Beckham walked hand-in-hand with Nicola Peltz. Bridgerton's Phoebe Dynevor could be seen with her co-star Regé-Jean Page.

It’s long been established that Ford knows how to get a woman red carpet ready, but last night he proved how committed he was to keeping her looking that way with a station for lipstick touch-ups—with Tom Ford Beauty, of course. Guests familiar with the hotel were likely delighted to see the entire ground floor of the 5th Avenue institution taken over for the occasion. Café Carlyle served as the makeup touch-up HQ; Bemelmans Bar was transformed into Bemelman’s by Cartier and filled with fabulous patrons as lively as the sketches of Madeline on the walls; and the new Dowling’s was taken over with a Cartier Champagne bar and dance floor.

Experiencing it all was Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, Eiza Gonzalez, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Dakota Johnson, Lily James, Huma Abedin, Ivy Getty, Joshua Jackson, Kendall Jenner, Laura Harrier, Lauren Santo Domingo, Nicolas Ghesquiere, Olivia Rodrigo, and Julianne Moore (divine in a custom Tom Ford look inspired by Jackie Kennedy). All in all—everyone you wanted there. 

Air kisses and “darling, you look wonderfuls” were exchanged and the vibe was positively spirited. Rachel Feinstein, John Currin, Lisa Love, and Hamish Bowles lounged together on a banquette. Meanwhile, Maude Apatow chatted with Dakota Johnson and posed for party pics. It was a scene as fashionable as the one Ford had created for the exhibition—better yet that the only battle was the choice between Champagne or Martinis.
