One of the most dynamic and complicated couples in literary history, Zelda made Fitzgerald work for it: After years of being together, she agreed to marry him only after he sold his first novel, This Side of Paradise, in 1920. They were also two heavy-hitting style icons of the fringe- and flapper-filled Jazz Age.

The painter and photographer started living together while Stieglitz was still married, but they had an unbreakable bond and inspired one another artistically. They married in 1924, but eventually grew apart, quite literally—she didn’t want to be with him in New York, as the pull toward New Mexico and her work there was too strong to ignore.

Tracy remained married to his wife throughout his 25-year affair with the legendary, tailored suit–wearing actress Hepburn. They starred in nine movies together and were never married, instead living separately but continuing to see each other for years before he died in 1967.

Theirs was a classic Old Hollywood love story: Married in 1945, when she was only 20 and he was 45, they met on set and were together until his death in 1957. They lived glamorously together, and she became widely known as a symbol of all-American style.

A comedic power couple both on and off the set of I Love Lucy, Ball and Arnaz were married in 1940 and founded Desilu Productions together.

A highly publicized affair during the filming of Cleopatra in 1962 brought these two Hollywood legends—“Liz and Dick” as the media liked to call them—together for the first time. After many breakups and even more diamonds, Taylor was once quoted as saying, “After Richard, the men in my life were just there to hold the coat, to open the door. All the men after Richard were really just company.”

She has an Hermès bag named after her and together they are staple pins on many a fashion enthusiast’s inspiration board. Both singers, they recorded an album together called Je T’aime . . . Moi Non Plus, released in 1969.

Married in 1969, the prolific artist and musician were the poster children for peace, love, and bohemia. When they first met in 1966, at one of Ono’s gallery shows, she alleged that she had no idea who the Beatles were.

Together, they made the song and the phrase “I Got You Babe” famous. They were married in 1964 and formed their pop music group, Sonny and Cher, that same year. Perhaps the cheeriest music couple in history, their ornate, sequined, and fur-laced ensembles became some of the most memorable red carpet and stage looks ever.

Married since 2001, DVF and Diller are pretty much the unofficial mayors of New York City. She heads up her fashion empire and the CFDA, while he is the chairman and senior executive of IAC and Expedia and is responsible for creating Fox and USA broadcasting companies. Together, they sit on numerous political and philanthropic boards, and recently gave at least $113 million for a new island park project in Manhattan from their Diller–Von Furstenberg Family Foundation.

The late, great musician married the Somali supermodel in Tuscany in 1992. As Bowie once said of Iman, “I’d never gone after anything in my life with such passion. I just knew she was the one.”

They’ve been together for years and have six children together, but they only recently tied the knot, in 2014. (She wore an Atelier Versace dress that was embroidered with designs drawn by the kids.) Aside from their acting careers, Jolie and Pitt are on a mission to save the world through their involvement in an impressive array of charities.

Say what you will about these two: There’s no denying that they have a huge hold on pop culture at the moment. She’s streamlined her fashion sense and he’s gained some well-deserved cred in the fashion industry. They’re modern-day celeb royalty, with money, power, and a strong sense of style that, at the very least, gets people talking.
