Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations - Introduction with Baz Luhrmann
Released on 05/07/2012
You know, Miuccia, I hate talking to designers.
It's the worst.
(Miuccia laughs)
So this impossible conversation between us
is something like an exception for me.
Yes, yes I can talk about fashion with so few people
because they really are the ones
that know what I'm talking about.
[Elsa] Yes.
Otherwise, it's kind of ridiculous or super technical.
You know, I never even intended to be a dress maker.
But what I'm really interested is about your life,
and that is all about, also about my work.
I'm always interested in the life of people.
Ah!
That we can talk about.
About life and maybe dresses a bit?
You know, I was the most impossible, super impetuous child.
Too wild an imagination,
always into trouble. To obey.
Not right for a good girl.
No, not at all.
Maybe you too were cut from this troublesome cloth
when you were younger, yes?
Yes, but those time I was searching
what was the strangest, the most silly things to do.
And mime, at those time--
Mime?
Yes, the most crazy thing I could do,
in Milano, still living in my family.
But Miuccia, you could not have been as troublesome as me.
Completely.
The theater was a world of sins.
Okay, did you run away.
No, no.
I think it's no secret that I met a man.
[Miuccia] Yes, yes.
And I had a daughter, Gogo,
and then my husband, he ran away, so.
But eventually, by chance,
my salvation was stumbling into fashion.
Yes, of course.
Finding beauty in my own way.
You had a much more difficult life than mine
and that why one of the reason why I like your life,
and like your job,
because-- Ah, no.
I see all the pain of it.
So, I'm curious now, Miuccia.
How did you go from the mime back to fashion?
Yes, I liked fashion.
I found myself in fashion,
hating it and doing what it was the most horrible thing
I could do with the people I was living with.
To be a woman, a fashion designer,
in the sixties and seventies, was the worst.
But I liked it so much that I did it anyway.
Yes, I think now, I realized why we are here.
It's not just the fashion.
[Miuccia] Yes.
But maybe it's the way we live.
'Cause in the end, there are many similarities.
Yes, many similarities, yes.
Salute.
