When I saw Cowboy Kate,

I thought Cowboy Kate was the Tommy girl.

Yes.

And I became obsessed with your work.

Oh, lovely.

[hip-hop beat]

[Sam] You know, an interesting thing about Cowboy Kate,

is that she's not your quintessential beautiful model.

She's a normal girl,

her teeth are uneven.

She did her own makeup, always.

Nobody else did her makeup.

She was just the girl next door, really.

I mean, she is totally timeless.

Mhmm

A wholesome natural beauty.

[jazz music]

[Tommy] I became totally inspired

by your photographs of Cowboy Kate.

Mhmm

And we began using them for our imagery

and our collectsions.

I think it was a very good idea to come together

and celebrate your work.

Explain why you decided to do this book at this time.

Looking through my archives,

I was surprised at how many

good images I had missed originally.

I suddenly thought,

why on earth did I not choose this particular image?

So this gave me an opportunity

to use those neglected images.

[Tommy] My favorite photograph is Cowboy Kate,

with the cowboy hat on.

The photograph of the horse in the stable

is definitely one of my all time favorites.

Oh, this is amazing.

I mean, she looks like a marionette.

[jazzy music]

There is a really strong relationship between

fashion and photography.

Fashion inspires the photographer

like a landscape inspires a photographer.

I was inspired by, as a young photographer,

by people like Irving Penn.

And afterwards by Richard Avedon.

And that, they

they used fashion as an inspiration

to make beautiful works of art.

What absorbs the culture of the moment,

if you're aware of what goes on, fashion wise,

designer wise, it has a tremendous influence

of what you do then.

We all stand on the shoulders of other giants

in our business.

[jazzy music]

It's wonderful to look through an archive

because it brings back so many happy memories

of the actual shoots.

[Tommy] Absolutely.

[Sam] The little mind of adventures one had,

and the good times you had, traveling,

and making friends with people.

For instance, I did a lot work on calendars,

these are all calendar shots.

When I traveled with a model and myself alone

to countries all over the world,

the model did their own makeup,

she helped me carry the cameras.

[chuckles]

It was um,

That doesn't happen anymore.

Two years in the making,

many pictures came in and out of the book

and many family arguments about the,

the quality of some of the pictures.

How many more books could be done?

How many more books?

I imagine two or three good books or so.

Two or three good books.

Yeah.
