Fashion Goes to the Movies: The Premiere of the Arianne Phillips Documentary Dressing the Part

When Mr Porter hosted a screening of the new documentary Dressing the Part, which chronicles the life and career of award-winning costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips, at the Metrograph on Thursday night, director Jeremy Langmead told audiences it was “a love letter to Arianne.” With an impressive ensemble of interviews ranging from Madonna to Lenny Kravitz to Courtney Love, the film touched on many different facets of Phillips’s legendary work, and in effect, was as much an homage to her story as it was to the art of fashion. “It’s about so much more than just looking cool,” says Jeremy Scott in one scene. “It’s bigger than the length of a skirt,” says Alessandro Michele in another. Fittingly, the occasion drew a stylish guest list of industry heavy hitters including Scott Love and Vogue’s Hamish Bowles to what was a perfect mid–New York Fashion Week night at the movies.
