Wedding table settings are arguably the most memorable part of a couple’s wedding decor, combining multiple visual elements that are reflective of the couple, their location, and their aesthetic. Some may opt for an abundance of flowers, others, dinner by candlelight. Then, there are the brides and grooms who want to march to the beat of their own drums and do something wildly different. Multiple Vogue wedding brides this past year have instead embraced food—from cakes to fruits—as the focal centerpiece. (“The influence of Dutch Masters-inspired floral design is evident as well. People are catching on to the trend of artful, fruit-dripped tablescapes with creative, often darker arrangements,” Colin Cowie told Vogue for our annual 2024 wedding trends report.)

Wedding Table Setting FAQ
A table setting has a few key elements: plate, silverware, and napkins. However, these can be expanded to include chargers, tablecloths, floral arrangements, candles, and any other décor pieces of your choosing.
When selecting your table setting, it’s important to think about the overall mood you are setting. A wedding in spring and summer may have a lighter palette, while one in fall and winter may choose moodier colors. However, this is not a set rule—just make sure to consider how your reception décor will fit within your venue and the rest of the aesthetic choices of your wedding.
Deciding whether to rent or buy your tableware often comes down to budget and storage. If you end up buying your own tableware, you need to think about what will happen to it after the wedding. Will you be able to use it, give pieces away to some family members, or donate it? This option may work if you have a small guest count. However, any wedding larger than 50 guests will likely need to rent items so you don’t create too much waste. In some cases, buying select pieces to add to your tablescapes might cost less than rentals in the long run. Just be sure you can find a place for them after the wedding.

This place setting, conceptualized by Diana Sorenson from Sugokuii Events for Rey Vakili and Jonny Ingham’s Taormina wedding, is the quintessence of maximalist joy.
The pastel plates—hand-painted to match the Sicilian-inspired decor of Nunziatina restaurant, the backdrop of the welcome dinner—add a unique splash of color. The linen napkins were embroidered (more texture!) with “pasta, granita & amore” under a “Testa di Moro”—the traditional Sicilian heads that you will find on almost every corner of Taormina.

For an elegant garden wedding, lean towards a palette on the softer side: Greenery brings a gorgeous blend of texture and layers to the simplicity of a white palette. Explore subtle ways to personalize your tablescape, so that every decorative element makes sense to you. In preparation for Rei Kawano Suliawan and Matthew Yoder’s Bali wedding, Alicia Rico from Bows and Arrows Flowers collaborated with the Ayana Resort gardening team to forage the leaves and branches from the resort, all trimmed one day prior to the wedding day.
“Alicia [Rico] knew that I didn’t want the florals to be too white, so she blended in beautiful shades of cream and yellow into the arrangement,” Rei says. “My family also has an orchid and anthurium farm and she was sure to utilize them as the main ingredient in her floral arrangements. I’m so proud of my family business and of our products and services—it was so great seeing them showcased throughout the wedding.”

Everybody loves a freebie, and there’s no rule against gifting party favors well before the end of the night. A thoughtful addition atop every guest’s plate can also double as both a souvenir and something decorative.
“My grandmother brought special pouches she made with ‘confetti,’ which are the candy-covered almonds, all the way from Rome,” says bride Paola Eulalia Saracino Fendi. “It's an Italian tradition to give these out at weddings for good luck. We placed them on top of the beautiful stationery Fee Greening made: a menu with an apricot design inspired by the wedding cake and the name cards, that had things from the sea, like jellyfish, a shell with a pearl, a lobster, et cetera.”

If you’re already staging your dinner in a picturesque setting, it lightens the load on wedding decor. Augusta Hoffman and Jonathan Swygert, for instance, chose to enjoy their candlelit dinner on a terrace at their venue, Hotel Il Pellicano, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Event planner Matthew Robbins, from Robbins Otoya, curated an enchanting display at the long table, adorning it with simple white peonies in French confit jars, Schumacher textiles, and vintage accents in silver and wood.
“Our welcome dinner was meant to feel easy and relaxed,” says Augusta. “Everything was meant to feel almost like an elegant Italian beach barbecue. We grilled different kinds of fish and served seafood pasta dishes, alongside aperitif cocktails and local wine.”

Hand-painted ceramics infuse an artisanal touch to table decor. Jaime Johnson and Benjamin Shulman, who married in Ostuni, Italy, took the art of table styling to new heights by handpicking plates for each guest from Fasano, a nearby Puglian town known for its ceramics; no two pieces were the same.

Another creation by Sugokuii Events’ Diana, these tables include custom-built trellises, embellished with cascading red roses and string lights. The subtle addition of blush-toned accents on the trellises not only complements the table linens, but also adds a contemporary twist to the otherwise rustic tables.
"We wanted it to feel like Capri from the ’60s, and it was like stepping into an Italian movie set," says bride Carly Cucco. “The décor was slightly rustic Italian, rich in details but always with a sense of fun, not taking itself too seriously and blending in naturally with the environment.”

“This was my dream tablescape, it felt romantic, whimsical, and paid homage to Italian craftsmanship,” says Feiping Chang, who had her big day in Capri, Italy. “The pink chargers were from Laboratorio Paravicini and had our initials painted onto them. The white plates are from a Roman ceramic studio and each had different textures and rims that complemented each other. The bread plates were rose quartz slabs that we had cut to size and painted gold on the edges. Instead of place cards, we had a local pastry chef in Capri create these incredibly intricate edible flowers and leaves made from sugar.”

The purpose of a charger plate is to elevate the table’s aesthetic, so experiment with decorative pieces that add a playful twist. Think outside the box with boho shapes and mismatched patterns to make the tabletop more intriguing.
“We wanted something colorful, floral, and fun for the welcome dinner,” says bride Nina Jiaravanon. “Our planner, Rachel Birthistle, and her team created this beautiful tablescape. We decorated the table with pink, yellow, orange, and purple blooms. For the tableware and vases we chose La DoubleJ.”

Don't be afraid of the drama of a dark tablecloth. When done right, it sets the stage for a romantically moody vibe that allows your lighter colors to shine without overwhelming the overall aesthetic. The key lies in the refinery of your place settings—keep it clean, and let the tablecloth work its magic.
Bride Lucrezia Bonaccorsi Beccaria’s tablecloths were antique and embroidered with mirrors that she found in India. Her plates, glasses, napkins, and lanterns were all from her mother Luisa Beccaria’s home collectsion. “I wanted wildflowers from the countryside and branches from love trees that have a lot of olives on them at this time of the year on the tables,” says Beccaria.

Alexandra Dorda and Stefan Marcu’s table setting is a reminder to not only consider your menu as you plan your place setting, but also that the food will be the true artistic centerpiece of the wedding table.
Alexandra and Stefan had their welcome dinner in Seville’s Palacio de Las Dueñas, a 15th-century Renaissance-style palace with Gothic and Moorish influences. “One of the reasons I fell in love with Palacio de Las Dueñas is that it has elements that remind me of my mother’s native Philippines, like the lush tropical gardens with giant elephant ear plants,” Alexandra says.
The dinner was kamayan-inspired, inviting guests to partake in a communal feast served on banana leaves (by Chef Jordy Navarra from Manila’s Toyo Eatery) and eaten with your hands. The experience ended with mango desserts by Cédric Grolet from Le Meurice in Paris. “Mangos are my favorite fruit and are a staple in the Philippines, so it was a wonderful way to tie the dessert back to the dinner in an elevated way,” Alexandra says.

Don’t just view flowers as accents, but art in and of themselves: florist Emily Thompson created towering epergnes overflowing with flowers for Gaby Novogratz's wedding in the Hamptons. “I still remember our brilliant florist, Emily Thompson, describings flowers as ‘little pieces of jewelry’ during our first meeting,” the bride said. “She transformed delicate wildflowers into bold, larger-than-life structures, perfectly capturing the surreal, Alice Through the Looking Glass–inspired atmosphere of our fairy-tale circus tent.”
