Cartier Takes Over Governors Island and Adds Its Glittering Touch

“I actually changed a nappy wearing this before I left my hotel room which was surreal,” said actress Carey Mulligan, looking like the definition of a modern day Hollywood swan in a Dior couture dress and a statement emerald and onyx necklace from Cartier. Mulligan gussied herself up to join an haute crew including Diane Kruger, Martha Stewart, Sofia Boutella at the French jewelry maison’s high jewelry celebration at Governor’s Island last night which saw Cartier create their own environment with sweeping views of the New York City and New Jersey skylines and the Statue of Liberty. Still, all eyes were on the house’s gems from their Résonances de Cartier collectsion. “Being a mum is brilliant, but it’s nice to have the extreme opposite in your life just to perk you up when you’re sleep deprived and struggling to get through the day,” added Mulligan with a laugh. But what is the actress’s philosophy for adding that extra wattage on the carpet? “If I’m wearing something dramatic, keep everything else simple,” shared Mulligan in a form-fitting yet demure black dress. “It was so classic and I wanted to wear something elegant to go with the jewelry because I don’t get to wear this kind of stuff very often. I wanted to make a big deal out of it.”
