On a balmy September night, opera aficionados gathered at Lincoln Center to experience the sensational Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role of Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma—an opera with a prickly-sharp love triangle that ends in tragedy—at the Metropolitan Opera’s Opening Night Gala. The evening began with a cocktail hour enjoyed by incoming guests who ascended the red carpeted, cantilevered steps. The scene resembled that of a fashion parade, with current-season Oscar de la Renta, Prada (as seen on Anne McNally), and Dolce & Gabbana (on Anh Duong) all on view. Ladies soon tucked their ball gowns into their seats, and men sat neatly in their black-tie best for the two-act, three-hour-long performance which transported guests to Gaul (France) circa 50 B.C.
