Awards season has just begun, and Regina King is already wowing, even over Zoom. For last night's Critics Choice Awards—where King was up for Best Director for her film One Night in Miami—the director-actor opted for an Atelier Versace dress accented by Cartier earrings. “We wanted to exude glamour and modern elegance for the Critics Choice Awards,” Wayman Bannerman of Wayman + Micah tells Vogue. “The subtle rich tone of the navy Atelier Versace dress was chosen because it felt subdued and timeless,” Micah McDonalds adds.
That said, drama arrived in the form of a sleek double ponytail that swung past King’s waist. “For Regina's look, I wanted to go for clean and chic in the front with a surprise 'party' in the back," celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of Flawless by Gabrielle Union Larry Sims tells Vogue. “The straps on the dress inspired the double rope ponytails.” Sims credits a mélange of products from the Flawless line for bringing the look together, from the heat protection spray to blow dry cream, oil, and edge control.
Makeup artist Latrice Johnson enhanced King's lit-from-within glow with Pat McGrath products, among them golden eyeshadows, foundations, concealers and berry-tinged glosses. “I wanted Regina’s makeup to be strong, bold, and sexy yet, still very elegant,” Johnson says.
“Award season is that time of the year where we can really pull out all of our collaborative creative stops. And I love it,” Sims adds. “It's especially enjoyable when your talent is down to play.”
