“When I got the script, I was just like, ‘Oh, my God, can you make this kind of movie?’ and ‘Are we going to get into trouble?’” noted a grinning Daniel Kaluuya, the breakout star of Jordan Peele’s electric film Get Out. “Because I really want to make this film . . . and I kind of like getting into trouble.”At Cipriani Wall Street last night, the 27th annual Independent Filmmaker Project Gotham Awards kicked off awards season for the Hollywood set, many of whom have, in one way or another, experienced a particularly turbulent past few months following consecutive scandals around industry ringleaders like Harvey Weinstein. For some, it’s been a time of moral reckoning and hard looks—an ongoing period of reflection that will hopefully lead to more equal and fair treatment of women in film. As Sofia Coppola rightly put it, “With some of these guys getting fired, I hope there will be more opportunity for women in powerful positions.”
