Jessica Griffith practically has backgammon in her blood. She grew up playing with her dad. “He is a great teacher and taught me and my two brothers how to play,” explains Griffith. Last year, she was on a family vacation in Harbour Island when she came across a unique board made with raffia and suddenly realized there was a hole in the market. Most of the boards she’d previously encountered were overproduced, machine made, and didn’t have the aesthetic vibe she was going for. She tracked down the local Bahamian craftsman, but he wasn’t interested in doing more, so she took matters into her own hands (literally) and launched a company called Nine Fair with plans to start creating them herself. Teaming up with a Danish woodworker in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, she started producing handmade custom boards by night, while working in private equity by day.
